Holland, MI | Under Construction

West Ottawa High School has been names a GRAMMY signature School for its outstanding music program. The school’s student performers in choir, band, orchestra, and jazz ensembles consistently receive top ratings and awards, as does the theater arts program.

All arts and STEM programs in the district are heavily supported by the community, and the district aims to increase the competitiveness of its programs by establishing a new, high-end performing arts center. West Ottawa is establishing a new Performing Arts Center (PAC) as part of its 2019 bond initiative.

The new PAC will complement an existing facility at Harbor Lights Middle School, expanding the district’s capability to grow student performers as well as the potential to host professional performing companies. The scope includes an approximately 56,000-square-foot addition to the North High School centered around a 1,200-seat center focused on a stage with a full-fly loft. This premier performance program is augmented by a feature entrance lobby and secondary performance space, as well as a breadth of support spaces to ensure a high-functioning and flexible facility. The district was interested fundamentally in a building that is resilient and durable, but that conveys a high-end, professional performance venue for the community. In addition to the main stage, multiple areas within the center double as performance / multi-use spaces, including the front entrance lobby, the balcony space, and a monumental staircase in the lobby.

Wood treatments throughout bring a warmer, professional aesthetic to the performance venue, and layering less resilient materials and finishes slightly out of reach ensures they won’t be susceptible to damage. Structural concrete block is placed in strategic locations for durability. Most rooms are opaque and acoustically controlled for practice and performance, while glass is an important feature in the lobby area, establishing a welcoming transparent view into the center’s foyer from the road.

Supported by a 2019 bond initiative, the West Ottawa Performing Arts Center – much like the student performers and artists who will occupy the space – is a source of pride for the community and a facility that will become a central hub for the arts.

Indianapolis, IN | Under Construction

As part of a multi-facility “Indy Campus Reimagined” initiative, Ivy Tech Community College (ITCC) is undertaking the renovation of the Illinois Fall Creek Center (IFC) to enhance its Nursing and Health Sciences programs. This project will repurpose existing classroom space, consolidating health sciences programs from the Fairbanks Lawrence campus and integrating state-of-the-art lab upgrades to better support modern student learning.

A key goal of this renovation is to centralize all student services on campus, creating a more intuitive and cohesive experience for students and staff. By consolidating services in one location, the design features clear wayfinding and establishes a primary entrance that enhances the facility’s arrival experience.

By creating a state-of-the-art space for Nursing and Health Sciences, ITCC is strengthening their connection to the local healthcare industry. Students will benefit from upgraded learning environments and proximity to clinical placements, internships, and workforce opportunities in the downtown area.

Additionally, the renovation represents a strategic investment in existing buildings, prioritizing enhancements that directly impact the student experience while setting a precedent for future upgrades as funding becomes available. Ivy Tech recognizes that to meet the growing demands of healthcare, manufacturing, and technology industries, significant updates are needed to ensure students have access to modern, high-quality learning environments. The IFC renovation is a critical step in advancing that vision.

Teams from McGee Design House, JPS Engineering, V&J Consulting, Pepper Construction, and GMB are working in collaboration with ITCC to complete this intensive renovation project. GMB has proudly worked on more than 165 projects throughout the state of Indiana with ITCC, including the recent East Chicago campus renovation and the Advanced Manufacturing & Automation center.

Rockford, MI | Completed 2024

Edgerton Trails Elementary School is an innovative addition to Rockford Public Schools and is their first new school in nearly 25 years. This state-of-the-art PK-5 facility was made possible through the community’s support of a $174 million bond issue passed in 2019. Designed to accommodate the growing population on the west side of Rockford, Edgerton Trails alleviates overcrowding in neighboring schools. The school is a testament to the district’s mission to provide safe learning environments that give students the academic and social skills needed to be successful, lifelong learners in a global society.

The school’s colorful interior is inspired by Rockford’s elementary science curriculum, with each grade level housed in distinct “neighborhoods” that reflect local habitats. The neighborhoods — The Pond (DK), The Woodlands (K-1), The Lakes (2-3), and The Dunes (4-5) — provide age-appropriate and fun environments that connect back to what they are learning. Students can feel emotionally and physically safe as the layout ensures they interact primarily with their peers in spaces designed specifically for their developmental stage. The integration of natural themes also extends to the building’s outdoor learning spaces, which includes a small classroom amphitheater and access to the district’s nature center. Two playgrounds on site also cater to the needs of lower and upper elementary age students.

One of the key principles guiding the design of Edgerton Trails was the creation of spaces where learning and collaboration are always on display. Glass windows and double doors into the adjoining extended learning areas allow students and staff to feel connected to the entire grade-level community. These dedicated spaces give teachers and students a place to engage in large group learning and play.

At the heart of Edgerton Trails is the learning commons, a vibrant media center that serves as the school’s central hub. The commons is designed for large-scale instruction and collaboration, providing direct access to the STEM room and art room. Here, students can prepare for future instruction using elements of the SCALE-UP education model used by Rockford’s high school students.

The school’s exterior fits within the surrounding community and features brick that matches the district high school, ensuring a timeless and consistent aesthetic. Inside, a variety of furniture options in the cafeteria and classrooms offer students choice and flexibility, while lock-down doors for each neighborhood enhance security. The school’s lighting and color schemes are thoughtfully selected to support emotional wellness, with each neighborhood featuring unique lighting elements that tie into their natural themes.

Edgerton Trails Elementary provides a dynamic learning environment that reflects Rockford Public Schools’ dedication to educational excellence and innovation. This new school not only meets the current needs of our growing community but is also designed to inspire and empower future generations of learners.

Grand Haven, MI | Under Construction

After nearly seven years of visioning and planning, Grand Haven Christian School (GHCS) is undertaking its most substantial facility expansion since the 1990s. The phased project is designed to support the school’s ongoing growth, strengthen its Christian learning environment, and welcome more students into the GHCS community.

This thoughtful addition includes a large new gymnasium with a stage, designed to serve not only athletic events like basketball, volleyball, and pickleball, but also worship services, student productions, and community gatherings. Retractable bleachers and moveable nets offer flexibility, allowing the space to easily adapt to a wide range of uses. The gable shape of the roof provides north facing clearstory light while reducing the volume of the space so the building can thoughtfully integrate into the neighborhood context and complement the existing school.

Five new middle school classrooms, two dedicated small group rooms organized by subject, and extended learning areas will provide room for over 200 additional students. The new learning environments are intentionally designed to be flexible, with built-ins for display and storage, technology and tack boards for visual learning, and gathering spaces that foster connection and collaboration. These spaces can also accommodate science curriculum, offering hands-on, future-ready experiences for students in Pre-K through 8th grade.

The project will also include renovations to the school’s existing main entryway and classrooms, a refreshed media center, a new teacher workroom, and updated outdoor areas for events and recreation. The playground equipment will be modernized, with new structures for Pre-K students, and new spaces will be created for both instructional learning and informal outdoor exploration. A new playfield adjacent to campus will also act as a community park and provide flexible green space for GHCS students. It was important for GHCS to grow in their current space and remain a neighborhood school that continues to meet the needs of its students while also maintaining a presence in the community.

Throughout the design, careful attention was given to ensure that branding and colors remain timeless and seamlessly integrate with the existing campus. The resulting facility will provide a cohesive environment that reflects the values of Grand Haven Christian School, supporting both short-term needs and long-term growth, while reinforcing the school’s mission to nurture faith-based learning in every student.

Chestertown, MD | Completed 2024

Washington College had a vision to broaden their market reach, streamline their communications, and increase student enrollment. Their marketing and enrollment teams sought to unite their efforts to effectively promote Washington College in local communities as well as within three new territories they had never been before spread out across the United States.

The primary campaign objective was to increase enrollment by:

  • Organizing a robust communication strategy through emails, SMS texting, and print mailings to nurture and ultimately enroll students.
  • Differentiating Washington College from other similarly named institutions and small private schools.
  • Employing creative digital marketing strategies to generate a higher concentration of names at the top of the funnel.

The team gained valuable insights from internal and external stakeholders, including the leadership team, enrollment team, marketing team, current students, alumni, faculty, and staff. This helped us understand Washington College’s unique identity and how to position it competitively in the higher education landscape. Through these insights, we discovered why students choose to attend Washington College, how to expand into new markets for Washington College, and what prospective students want to know about Washington College.

With this data, we developed strategic drivers to guide the creation of an enrollment strategy. This phase involved leveraging both internal and external research to shape the communication strategy. Our roadmap included content for emails, postcards, and SMS texts, along with a communications calendar and metrics for evaluating success and identifying areas for improvement.

Although regional differences necessitated running three separate campaigns, our “Not that Washington” campaign quickly proved successful. This campaign effectively differentiated Washington College from other institutions with the same namesake and clarified its location in Maryland. Our digital marketing efforts significantly boosted brand awareness, and our email marketing campaign generated a substantial number of qualified inquiries. Following the launch of the campaigns, we built reports within the CRM to enable the Washington College team to easily track the success of each campaign.

By engaging with key stakeholders and developing a comprehensive enrollment strategy—which included list buying, digital marketing recommendations, a communication plan, and CRM optimization—we crafted creative assets and measured the effectiveness of each effort. This holistic approach significantly boosted both brand awareness and qualified leads for Washington College.

The renovation and addition project at Chicago Christian High School was guided by five key principles: capturing a holistic campus vision, meeting each student where they are through 21st-century learning, creating strong connections, providing a facility that is accessible to all and establishing a lasting and durable impact. This project includes an eye-catching addition and renovation to improve the cafeteria and adjacent commons area, creating a multifunctional space for eating, learning, and gathering. The new addition, which serves as a visual and welcoming entrance, integrates the school’s new branding throughout and features a learning stair at the entrance, lounge areas, and accessibility ramps that connect seamlessly with the architectural design.

Holland, MI | Under Construction

Holland Heights Elementary School is embarking on an exciting transformation to create updated learning environments and to enhance nature-based learning. This $21.2 million project, funded through a bond passed by voters in May 2021, will bring new classrooms, a media center, and updated playground to K-5 students.

The oldest portion of the building, originally opened in 1952, will be demolished to make room for new construction. The project will retain and renovate key existing facilities such as the gym, cafeteria, and main office, while creating new specials areas including a music room, STEM lab, and art room.

Holland Heights Elementary has partnered with the Outdoor Discovery Center Education Network to provide students with a nature-based learning experience that will help them learn, read, and grow. The school’s design features extensive outdoor learning spaces, ensuring that students can engage with nature year-round. Each grade-level neighborhood has themes inspired by natural environments—the wetlands, forest, and dunes—and includes extended learning areas connected to the outdoors. The school’s site boasts numerous outdoor learning features, including a spacious playground, soccer field, and a natural hill with stepping walkways.

The building wings create courtyard-like areas with learning circles equipped with power and furniture, and covered areas for outdoor classes and play. The site also features a dry creek bed, which aids in drainage and stormwater management while offering opportunities for water studies and outdoor exploration. The outdoor areas are designed to provide direct views from classrooms, promoting transparency and a seamless connection with nature.

The interior of Holland Heights Elementary was designed with natural light and transparency in mind. Glass elements are used throughout to maintain a bright and open atmosphere. The media center is centrally located, offering visibility in multiple directions within the building. Spartanburg, SC | Completed 2024

University of South Carolina Upstate (USC Upstate) approached our team with the goal of redesigning their website, driven by a recent brand redevelopment. They sought to quickly integrate their new brand into a web expression that was not only functional, but also aligned with their focus on the incoming student experience. This project demanded a swift turnaround, highlighting the urgency and importance of the redesign project.

Our team delivered a comprehensive suite of services to USC Upstate, including:

  • Web Accessibility
  • UX/UI Design
  • Web Redesign
  • Web Development
  • Site Architecture

An expediated timeline required us to quickly translate the existing brand into a digital space that was both functional and true to the new brand identity, ensuring a cohesive and engaging user experience. Despite changes within the client’s creative team, we successfully elevated the brand through design improvements and increased the overall functionality of their website by implementing a new CMS platform. This update will continue to provide flexibility for the USC Upstate team and provides opportunities for continuous web growth.

The project resulted in significant improvements for both the client and their web users. By streamlining the number of pages, the website has become more manageable for the internal team, while improved search functionality makes the most important information easier to find for incoming students. This process has also enhanced internal web support, making the website a more useful tool for the College. The GMB team was able to implement a custom-built higher education WordPress theme developed internally by the team for this project. Since implementation, the overall amount of time each web user engages with this site has increased significantly.

The new website has successfully met the goals set by USC Upstate, enhancing their brand’s digital presence and improving user experience for prospective students.
