Holland, MI | Under Construction

Holland Heights Elementary School is embarking on an exciting transformation to create updated learning environments and to enhance nature-based learning. This $21.2 million project, funded through a bond passed by voters in May 2021, will bring new classrooms, a media center, and updated playground to K-5 students.

The oldest portion of the building, originally opened in 1952, will be demolished to make room for new construction. The project will retain and renovate key existing facilities such as the gym, cafeteria, and main office, while creating new specials areas including a music room, STEM lab, and art room.

Holland Heights Elementary has partnered with the Outdoor Discovery Center Education Network to provide students with a nature-based learning experience that will help them learn, read, and grow. The school’s design features extensive outdoor learning spaces, ensuring that students can engage with nature year-round. Each grade-level neighborhood has themes inspired by natural environments—the wetlands, forest, and dunes—and includes extended learning areas connected to the outdoors. The school’s site boasts numerous outdoor learning features, including a spacious playground, soccer field, and a natural hill with stepping walkways.

The building wings create courtyard-like areas with learning circles equipped with power and furniture, and covered areas for outdoor classes and play. The site also features a dry creek bed, which aids in drainage and stormwater management while offering opportunities for water studies and outdoor exploration. The outdoor areas are designed to provide direct views from classrooms, promoting transparency and a seamless connection with nature.

The interior of Holland Heights Elementary was designed with natural light and transparency in mind. Glass elements are used throughout to maintain a bright and open atmosphere. The media center is centrally located, offering visibility in multiple directions within the building. Each neighborhood’s design reflects its nature theme, with specific wall coverings and entrances that enhance the nature-based learning experience.

East Chicago, IN | Under Construction

The Lake County campus of Ivy Tech Community College (ITCC) will be undergoing extensive renovations in East Chicago. ITCC has made a significant investment in the community and the educational programs it offers. The main building on campus, the De La Garza Building, was originally designed by architect Helmut Jahn and the upcoming renovations will remain true to the spirit of the initial design concepts, which emphasize open spaces, natural lighting, and ample glass.

A reconstruction of the entrance will create a predominate, accessible front entry space featuring an exterior canopy that will be visible from the street and will enhance the building user’s entry experience. The renovated two-story lobby will include flexible seating and gathering areas, an express enrollment area, and space for the college’s career development services. The large mezzanine on the second floor with a new open staircase invites views directly into the labs spaces and creates an impactful entrance experience with visibility and connectivity between students and activities on multiple levels. The graphics, furniture, and building materials will reflect both an industrial and technical aesthetic that will balance against a wooden accent wall to create a warm and welcoming lobby. The lobby renovation will extend down the long corridor on both floors. On the first floor several program entrance “front porches” off the main corridor are included in the design to increase visibility of the programs and break down the journey of the long corridor.

The new design will update the equipment, technology, and layout throughout the facility. The building will receive updated furnishings, new building infrastructure systems, renovated restrooms, upgrades to classrooms, labs, and offices as well as new lighting and windows. This project aims to create an inspiring and innovative environment that appeals to new and existing ITCC students, reflecting the energy of the programs and the future of these industries. ITCC is also intent on increasing recruitment and student retention in the East Chicago area.

The new renovations follow the recently completed welding lab and classroom update project at ITCC’s East Chicago location. Other career technical programs at the campus include advanced manufacturing, machine tool, process operations, culinary arts, and pre-nursing. ITCC wanted this campus to provide flexible spaces to promote partnerships with companies in the community to leverage the college for employee training opportunities. GMB is working alongside partners at McGee Design House and JPS Consulting Engineers for this renovation project.

“The work will transform this part of our campus, not just aesthetically but in tangible ways that will enhance both the student and employee experience.”

Grand Rapids, MI | Completed 2021

The Project NEXT program at Forest Hills Northern (FHN) High School is a project-based collaborative learning program that began as a pilot initiative in the media center in 2018.

At the time, a modest investment was made in the pilot program by designing and refreshing the school’s media center with new, flexible furniture more conducive to next-generation, collaborative learning. In Project NEXT, students learn the state-required high school curricula in a series of both individual and group assignments throughout their four years at FHN. Students tackle real-world problems and fuse science, social studies, English, art and design, and math to produce innovative learning and projects.

Project-Based Learning

As the program has grown in its popularity and success, this type of learning requires spaces with inherent flexibility. Students in the program identify and propose solutions to real-world problems, so spaces that fuel collaboration and creativity are a must. Redesigning the school’s west wing to accommodate those musts started with converting a courtyard into a central learning commons, known as the Design Center. Next to that space, there are classroom pods of four classrooms and a breakout space. The pods can be interconnected for collaboration and co-teaching as needed. Classrooms on the southern side house science labs and life skills spaces. On the western edge, a new work shop and art space tie back to the mission of the program and reinforce the importance of project-based, hands-on learning.

Wyoming, MI | Completed 2021

Wyoming Public Schools wanted to create spaces that gave students the opportunity to explore, create, and collaborate with one another in an environment that is both safe and inviting.

At Wyoming, finding ways to foster changing perceptions and instill community pride are at the heart of what we were trying to accomplish with the newly designed high school. Located in the largest suburb of metropolitan Grand Rapids, two high schools in the Wyoming district were merged several years ago, and they were struggling to build an identity with a new mascot, colors, and branding. Transforming a severely aging building with small classrooms and narrow corridors into an environment that is both safe and inviting, through the creation of new spaces that give students the opportunity to explore, create, and collaborate with one another, required a multi-phase renovation and new construction. The district wanted the new high school to create a sense of pride in the community and change the way students and faculty identify themselves – and the community sought to invest in the future success of the students enrolled in the district’s schools.

Creating a Space Where Students Can Explore Together

As part of a $79.5 million school improvement bond passed in 2018, the high school underwent a two-phase makeover, including a 30-classroom addition, creating more flexible, creative space in the existing building, and athletic facilities upgrades. The design includes spaces that are adaptable to work with changing educational models and the ways in which students learn. This new addition and renovation establish spaces that promote learning through collaboration and foster a new sense of pride and identity in the community. The additional space will also benefit the Middle College program, which enrolls ~200 students. Since 2009, students who commit to five years of high school can earn a diploma and an associate degree through a partnership with Grand Rapids Community College.

A New Beginning

After demolition of a portion of the building that was no longer viable, a two-story addition that added 30 classrooms for grades 10-12 was constructed, connecting the site. Phase 2 saw a brand-new café, new offices, and new common areas, followed by construction of dedicated science, arts, and technology wings, and a new, connected stadium and athletics facilities – designed with an intentional desire to use the space in a way that’s better for the building as well as the students and teachers who occupy it every day. Nothing about the old building was recognizable to students as they entered the renovated space for the first time, creating an immediately stronger sense of pride among the students.

Hear more about the impact this project has had on the lives of Wyoming students and staff!

The placement of the new building addition created an L-shaped courtyard ideal for outdoor learning and student gathering, which students didn’t have before. Within the buildings, teachers can flex classroom spaces and supervise students in corridors and common areas that have the capability to become extended learning areas for small group or solo learning. A large learning staircase in the academic area allows for more streamlined traffic flow and transparently connects students on both floors. Strategically placed glass windows and partitions allow for natural light to enter the entire space and ensure higher visibility for a more secure environment. Even the furniture in the extended learning areas is flexible and moveable for students to create learning spaces that best suit their needs. When students are given ownership of a space to truly make it their own, they understand that freedom and have a greater sense of pride in their school.

By creating equity in the new and renovated spaces of the school and reorganizing the building into a multi-use facility of classrooms surrounding collaborative learning environments, the amenities and technological enhancements are accessible to all students. The centralized space is a visual and physical connection to collaborative, flexible learning that instills school pride and stirs curiosity for students and the community alike.
