Rockford, MI | Completed 2024

Edgerton Trails Elementary School is an innovative addition to Rockford Public Schools and is their first new school in nearly 25 years. This state-of-the-art PK-5 facility was made possible through the community’s support of a $174 million bond issue passed in 2019. Designed to accommodate the growing population on the west side of Rockford, Edgerton Trails alleviates overcrowding in neighboring schools. The school is a testament to the district’s mission to provide safe learning environments that give students the academic and social skills needed to be successful, lifelong learners in a global society.

The school’s colorful interior is inspired by Rockford’s elementary science curriculum, with each grade level housed in distinct “neighborhoods” that reflect local habitats. The neighborhoods — The Pond (DK), The Woodlands (K-1), The Lakes (2-3), and The Dunes (4-5) — provide age-appropriate and fun environments that connect back to what they are learning. Students can feel emotionally and physically safe as the layout ensures they interact primarily with their peers in spaces designed specifically for their developmental stage. The integration of natural themes also extends to the building’s outdoor learning spaces, which includes a small classroom amphitheater and access to the district’s nature center. Two playgrounds on site also cater to the needs of lower and upper elementary age students.

One of the key principles guiding the design of Edgerton Trails was the creation of spaces where learning and collaboration are always on display. Glass windows and double doors into the adjoining extended learning areas allow students and staff to feel connected to the entire grade-level community. These dedicated spaces give teachers and students a place to engage in large group learning and play.

At the heart of Edgerton Trails is the learning commons, a vibrant media center that serves as the school’s central hub. The commons is designed for large-scale instruction and collaboration, providing direct access to the STEM room and art room. Here, students can prepare for future instruction using elements of the SCALE-UP education model used by Rockford’s high school students.

The school’s exterior fits within the surrounding community and features brick that matches the district high school, ensuring a timeless and consistent aesthetic. Inside, a variety of furniture options in the cafeteria and classrooms offer students choice and flexibility, while lock-down doors for each neighborhood enhance security. The school’s lighting and color schemes are thoughtfully selected to support emotional wellness, with each neighborhood featuring unique lighting elements that tie into their natural themes.

Edgerton Trails Elementary provides a dynamic learning environment that reflects Rockford Public Schools’ dedication to educational excellence and innovation. This new school not only meets the current needs of our growing community but is also designed to inspire and empower future generations of learners.

Holland, MI | Under Construction

Holland Heights Elementary School is embarking on an exciting transformation to create updated learning environments and to enhance nature-based learning. This $21.2 million project, funded through a bond passed by voters in May 2021, will bring new classrooms, a media center, and updated playground to K-5 students.

The oldest portion of the building, originally opened in 1952, will be demolished to make room for new construction. The project will retain and renovate key existing facilities such as the gym, cafeteria, and main office, while creating new specials areas including a music room, STEM lab, and art room.

Holland Heights Elementary has partnered with the Outdoor Discovery Center Education Network to provide students with a nature-based learning experience that will help them learn, read, and grow. The school’s design features extensive outdoor learning spaces, ensuring that students can engage with nature year-round. Each grade-level neighborhood has themes inspired by natural environments—the wetlands, forest, and dunes—and includes extended learning areas connected to the outdoors. The school’s site boasts numerous outdoor learning features, including a spacious playground, soccer field, and a natural hill with stepping walkways.

The building wings create courtyard-like areas with learning circles equipped with power and furniture, and covered areas for outdoor classes and play. The site also features a dry creek bed, which aids in drainage and stormwater management while offering opportunities for water studies and outdoor exploration. The outdoor areas are designed to provide direct views from classrooms, promoting transparency and a seamless connection with nature.

The interior of Holland Heights Elementary was designed with natural light and transparency in mind. Glass elements are used throughout to maintain a bright and open atmosphere. The media center is centrally located, offering visibility in multiple directions within the building. Each neighborhood’s design reflects its nature theme, with specific wall coverings and entrances that enhance the nature-based learning experience.

Kalamazoo, MI | Completed 2024

This renovation and addition project will transform the Stadium Club at Western Michigan University (WMU)’s Waldo Stadium Field from primarily game day use to a 24/7/365 a year entertaining, fundraising, and intimate conversation space. The goal of the updated suite is to offer an elegant and welcoming experience to patrons unique to WMU.

A more modern and luxurious feel within the space, enhanced by high-end finishes and unique backgrounds, will add an excitement that can be easily shared on social media channels.

The upgraded President’s Suite will have enhanced sight lines across the suite, improved insulation, and new window systems tuned for year-round use. A new exterior canopy and landscape will help create a curated experience as soon as patrons approach the pressbox at the entry drive. An increased focus on accessibility to the suite led to the removal of the tiered seating, the inclusion of a wheelchair lift, and easy to navigate pathways. The existing stadium seating will be reimagined for new dining settings and comfortable conversation, with the incorporation of a series of sunken living rooms and a horseshoe-shaped bar, for face-to-face interactions. The interior of the suite is complemented by a gracious, all-season, outdoor patio that has been flattened for accessibility, easy conversation, and great views of the field and campus beyond. The project will also incorporate multiple sustainable elements and will seek LEED certification.

Evanston, IL

Northwestern’s McCormick School of Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs and research opportunities, empowering their students to become whole-brain engineers. Students from the McCormick School of Engineering are equipped with the tools to pursue a wide range of careers, advanced study, and experiences after graduation.

Northwestern was looking for a strategic partner that could bring their brand and graduate programs to life. With 11 separate and distinctive programs to promote, the GMB team met with each program director to understand what makes them unique and how their different prospective student groups live in the digital space. Our plan included diving deep into target audience demographics research, discovering appropriate channels to reach each audience, and establishing budgets. Each digital marketing campaign speaks to the School of Engineering brand, while weaving in unique language that tells the story of each graduate study program. The programs were not using graphic type ads previously, and this gave a consistent look and feel across the portfolio while speaking specifically to the individual program. These programs include artificial intelligence, robotics, biomedical engineering, engineering management, design and innovation, and more.

At the same time, it was important to Northwestern to accurately document and retain student data from their marketing efforts. After losing historical data from previous campaigns, our team helped empower the client to keep and use their own accounts to produce transparent reports that informed their marketing teams, the dean, and program directors.

Over the past three years, we have continued to refine their digital campaign language and audiences to reach a higher quality and engaged student pool. Our team has also led additional projects with Northwestern, including a CRM audit that targeted best practices for tagging and tracking, SEO analysis, and website landing page audits.

The McCormick School of Engineering graduate programs emphasize excellence in education and research, where the students are exceptionally prepared for academic and professional success. From 2023 to 2024, the campaigns yielded consistent results across all programs:

  • 27% increase in conversion rate
  • 106% increase in click-through rate
  • 109% increase in leads year over year

Holland, MI | Completed 2021

GMB, The ODC Network (ODC), and the City of Holland partnered to create the Sally Smoly Nature Playscape at Window on the Waterfront Park (WOW). This 1-acre park within a park had a $350,000 budget, the last $100,000 of which was raised through a $50,000 crowdfunding and a matching grant from MEDC’s Public Spaces Community Places program in the summer of 2021.

Located two blocks from downtown Holland, the project introduces the first playground within a 20-minute walk and also serve residents of nearby senior living facilities. The project supports ODC’s mission to connect people to nature and provides play and learn spaces.

Sally Smoly Nature Playscape is sited in a central greenspace on existing parkland. The park offers climbing structures constructed of logs, nets, rocks and boulders; slides; fully accessible, looping walking paths and features making the space usable for people of all abilities; creative play areas that include a playhouse, sand, a deck lookout and sledding hill; hammock posts; an amphitheater and stage space plus a pavilion and benches; large grassy greenspace for games and activities; landscaping with a focus on a natural environment with an abundance of native plants and vegetation; fencing for the early childhood area; and adjacent parking.

“The Michigan Municipal League is a firm believer in building community wealth in ways that enhance the human experience for everyone. Creating this new WOW Park will definitely improve the experience for all living in and visiting Holland. That is what community wealth building is about.”

Dan Gilmartin, League’s CEO and Executive Director
