Hudsonville, MI | Completed 2023

Since 2018, Hudsonville Public Schools has added around 125 students per year in the district and needed educational facilities to accommodate their current and future growth. As part of the district’s long-term master plan, the community approved a 2019 bond proposal to build new school facilities, including a new school for fifth and sixth graders, as well as renovate and add onto existing buildings, to address the district’s population needs. The high school has undergone a complete transformation to create additional classrooms, expand athletics and arts facilities, and connect campus buildings with multifunctional spaces.

With a total of 104,000 square feet, the new Hudsonville Fieldhouse serves as the new athletics and training hub for the high school. Located south of the existing high school building, the fieldhouse includes locker rooms, a 1/9 mile running track, two-levels of fitness and strength areas, a multipurpose tennis court, and three full size basketball courts for athletics events with spectator seating for 3,700 people. The unique top-loading design of the fieldhouse delivers a 360-view of the court floor and connects spaces on the upper level, making the facility ideal for hosting competitions, expositions, and community events. High-performance lighting in the fieldhouse provides an elevated spectator experience complemented by ample daylighting, a center-hung video board, and interactive district branding throughout.

A new campus connector and secure entrance joins the dispersed high school buildings into one connected facility with a single point of entry. A centralized administration suite and counseling offices are housed adjacent to the connector and across from the new academic commons area. An enclosed bridge connects the campuses together over a river and adds eight new classrooms in the connection area. The school’s current office has been transformed into a new home for the robotics program, and an expanded café with streamlined serving, a new kitchen, and additional open space seating for up to 1,000 students creates flexible options for students. A choir addition brings 5,400 square feet of rehearsal space to the fine arts wing and includes sound-proof practice rooms, a large multipurpose ensemble room, storage space for the choir and theater, and a new hallway connecting the fine arts building to the main commons. Dedicated bus and vehicle drop off loops also improve traffic flow for the entire site and expanded parking areas now feature electric vehicle charging stations for students, staff, and visitors.

It was important to the district to build spaces that reflected student talent, celebrated their successes, and reinforced the brand and culture of Hudsonville. The upgraded facility is one of the largest high school complexes in the state, with almost 580,000 square feet under one roof. Students and staff can now enjoy intentionally design spaces that are connected, flexible, intuitive, and inviting.

Grandville, MI | Completed 2023

To support an influx of K-8 students, Grandville Public Schools built a new 7/8 middle school which will allow them to repurpose the existing middle school into a 5/6 facility and open space in their neighborhood elementary buildings as part of a $94 million bond proposal.

The new $57 million 7/8 building is located adjacent to the current high school and addresses capacity issues at the district’s elementary buildings with the increase of new developments to the area. Treating this shared location as a campus allows room for future expansion and creates a combined location for community amenities.

The new, multi-story facility boasts more than 200,000 square feet of teaching and learning space that is flexible and student focused. A large learning staircase with adjacent technology creates a space for students to socialize, have small group meetings, and eat lunch. Corridors are spacious and act as extended, active learning areas with movable furniture and technology. Emphasis on creating external and internal transparency with safety glazing gives the facility ample natural light but maintains student focus and security with sight lines for adequate supervision. A large media center with presentation spaces and multiple soft seating options fosters a sense of collaboration and innovation. Breakout rooms and large group spaces create flexible learning opportunities in a non-traditional setting to boost creative thinking.

Academic Achievements

The new middle school offers students a variety of specialized spaces for a well-rounded educational experience. Classrooms contain modular casework, TVs on mobile carts, and flexible furniture which allows for easy rearranging of teachers and programs as educational needs change throughout the day and in the future. The academic wing is separated from shared resource areas with the cafeteria acting as a central hub in between. Specialized areas include a performing arts theater classroom, shop spaces, an art room, STEM classrooms, science lab with outdoor access, and band, orchestra and choir spaces.

Athletic Excellence

Multiple athletics spaces in the school give Grandville students plenty of opportunity to increase their physical activity and competitive sport pursuits. A large gymnasium with bleachers and an upper track is complemented by an adjacent wrestling and cheer space. The school also features an additional auxiliary gymnasium and a weight room with community access. Outside, middle school-aged students can participate in recreation time on the basketball courts, 40-meter sprint turf, or athletic fields. The main gymnasium, located on the north side of the site, is built into the hillside which minimizes the visual footprint of the facility to keep sight lines desirable for nearby neighborhoods. Placing the building on this location on site also preserves the existing wetland and many of the school’s mature trees. The academics wing faces a wetland area which offers natural views during class time. An outdoor tiered seating area near the wetlands also gives students a chance to learn in an outdoor setting.

This project included a significant upgrade in facilities for the district’s signature extracurricular robotics program, the Grandville Robodawgs. The robotics arena, the only built-for-purpose robotics competition center in the eastern United States, can host a variety of competitions (including Lego League and aerial drones) with up to 2,000 spectators. The adjacent multi-purpose gymnasium space can convert from hosting traditional sports to becoming a venue for FIRST Robotics Competitions (FRC) and VEX Robotics with multiple competition fields and pits for up to 120 teams. Adjacent woodshop spaces, mini hardware store, concessions, and multiple load-in points with large rollup doors allow for robot building and practice, 3D printing, storage, and multi-purpose space. The district can control the amount of access to the school’s non-academic spaces for after-hours use, keeping the academics wing secure while still welcoming groups for events or extracurricular activities.

The facility’s design also incorporates many methodologies that enhance the social-emotional learning and development of middle school students. By creating intentional collaboration spaces that encourage relationship building to promoting nature rich learning with hands-on opportunities, the district kept student mental health in mind. A counseling area in the school also has a separate entrance from the main office to promote student’s privacy when seeking support services. Throughout the facility, a cohesive maroon and gray color palette, along with branded graphics, clearly identifies itself as a “Grandville” building. Student focused messaging in the building encourages positivity and an inclusive sense of belonging for all students.

Kalamazoo, MI | Completed 2024

This renovation and addition project will transform the Stadium Club at Western Michigan University (WMU)’s Waldo Stadium Field from primarily game day use to a 24/7/365 a year entertaining, fundraising, and intimate conversation space. The goal of the updated suite is to offer an elegant and welcoming experience to patrons unique to WMU.

A more modern and luxurious feel within the space, enhanced by high-end finishes and unique backgrounds, will add an excitement that can be easily shared on social media channels.

The upgraded President’s Suite will have enhanced sight lines across the suite, improved insulation, and new window systems tuned for year-round use. A new exterior canopy and landscape will help create a curated experience as soon as patrons approach the pressbox at the entry drive. An increased focus on accessibility to the suite led to the removal of the tiered seating, the inclusion of a wheelchair lift, and easy to navigate pathways. The existing stadium seating will be reimagined for new dining settings and comfortable conversation, with the incorporation of a series of sunken living rooms and a horseshoe-shaped bar, for face-to-face interactions. The interior of the suite is complemented by a gracious, all-season, outdoor patio that has been flattened for accessibility, easy conversation, and great views of the field and campus beyond. The project will also incorporate multiple sustainable elements and will seek LEED certification.

Hudsonville, MI | Completed 2023

As the largest district in Ottawa County, Hudsonville Public Schools is rapidly growing, adding nearly 125 students each year for the last five years, and that growth is expected to continue. As part of the district’s long-term master plan, the community approved a 2019 bond proposal to identify sites and build new school facilities to address the district’s population needs.

A new 5/6 intermediate and upper elementary school building adjacent to the existing middle school addresses space issues at the middle school and K-5 elementary school on the district’s burgeoning north side, in addition to creating age-appropriate classrooms and learning spaces with integrated technology and flexible furniture. The building can accommodate up to 750 students and ease their transition between elementary and middle school with spaces that meet students at their level and accommodate the curriculum and instruction.

Middle School Learning

The school was designed with the specific needs of students in the 5th and 6th grades in mind, providing them with a tailored environment that encourages academic growth, personal development, and social interaction. A secure entry into an open, central common area connecting the academic areas, cafeteria, and gymnasium invites ample natural light and creates spaces for impromptu collaboration and small group instruction as well as community events. The large gymnasium includes multi-use courts for volleyball, basketball, and pickleball, and gives the growing district more space for after-school athletics practice and events. The centralized extended learning areas of the academic wing act as an additional collaboration space with soft seating and technology for large or small groups, with a separate book vault located in the lower level. The flexible furniture products, postures, and finishes mature with the students offering a variety of solutions for a diverse group of learners.

The facility’s exterior aesthetics complement the other schools in the district to keep a consistent look and feel between grade levels. Wood accents throughout the building add a warmth that resembles a nest, creating a link to the district’s mascot, the eagle, to establish an inviting atmosphere that shelters students at the middle school age. The new building enables the district to modify the educational delivery model in Hudsonville, focusing on the transitional learner, shifting grade levels, creating space for students and teachers, and better connecting Hudsonville’s schools across the community.

The facility is nestled into an existing hillside which gives the school a smaller visual presence from the main road that is less overwhelming to younger learners. The two-story entrance creates greater sight lines for supervision during high volume times and allows for visual connectivity to the whole building and outdoor play spaces. A classroom wing branches out from the central overlook, separating academic spaces from elective classrooms and specials. The school features several specialized areas such as science labs, a maker’s space, music/band rooms, and large group instruction areas, ensuring that students have access to a variety of resources. Classrooms have a ‘front porch’ with additional seating that aims to extend learning opportunities outside the boundaries of the classroom. The flexible furniture gives students the opportunity to choose their seating and learning style to inspire healthy student development in both educational and social spaces.

Outdoor Extended Learning

Outside, a unique playscape area was created to encourage physical activity and socialization at this transitional stage. The multi-tier playscape offers different opportunities and zones for students to play, learn, and observe. The outdoor space includes a climbing obstacle course with turf that encourages agility and competitive play, a running track, basketball hoops and pavement games area, multiple seating zones, and a play wall with creative graphics. Academic instruction can also take place in the outdoor area, with enough seating and tables for a full classroom. Each section of the play area is accessible and is enhanced by shade cover and natural landscaping.

Grand Rapids, MI | Under Construction

Calvin University’s athletics improvements projects embody the idea of “bring teams home” by developing a vibrant and centralized space on campus for all athletics groups. Building from the University’s 2015 master plan, these improvements create a coherent, purposeful, and connected long-term plan for growth on campus through athletics. The multi-phase project includes updates to Gainey Athletic Field’s turf and track and the construction of the new Calvin University soccer stadium.

The projects kicked off with the construction of a new track at the Gainey Athletic Field because the original track was displaced by the construction of the new stadium. The turf soccer field at Zuidema Field, the first turf field for the University, was completed next which offers space for multiple sports teams to use. The stadium field will be home for Calvin’s men’s and women’s soccer and men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, with options for outdoor physical education classes and intramural activities. The baseball, softball and cross-country teams could also utilize the synthetic turf as a practice site when their fields’ conditions are inadequate.

A Sense of Belonging

The new stadium is designed to seat 850 spectators with field lighting, restrooms, concessions, pressbox, ticketing and team locker rooms. The inclusion of covered seating was another important element that creates a high-end fan experience. The University wanted to create a connected student experience through athletics that elevates Calvin’s programs both regionally and nationally.  The stadium’s design is distinctive and collegiate while staying true to the prairie style architecture displayed around the University campus. Branded team rooms at Zuidema Stadium create a ‘third space’ for students, complementary to their education and living spaces, and provide a connected sense of belonging for student athletes.

A Sustainable Future

A large focus of this project was honoring Calvin University’s commitment to sustainability. The university’s strategic plan includes environmental sustainability as one of its core values as the university is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2057. Both buildings associated with the soccer stadium will use a mechanical geothermal system with two separate geothermal loops adjacent to the playing field. An innovative stormwater detention management system with underground storage was coordinated between four local municipalities to meet strict regulations as well.

Holland, MI | Under Construction

The Holland community will soon be home to a welcoming and unique looped ice-skating rink at the Window on the Waterfront (WOW) Park. The new rink will feature a ribbon design with a circle “pond” rink that creates a fun and unique user experience, bringing people to downtown Holland.

The rink will be made of real ice during the winter months and will have multi-year use that appeals to all park users. In peak winter season, ice skating, curling, outdoor fireplaces and gathering spaces can be enjoyed at the rink. In the warmer months, a small amphitheater hill will be created for performance space with outdoor seating and amenities. Concessions, bathrooms, storage buildings and canopies will complete the outdoor rink space.

Connecting the Holland Community

In planning for more than 25 years, the ice rink project is finally coming to life thanks in part to a community member donation and a state-level grant. Situated on a previous refuse site, the soil conditions presented several challenges to the team, but has been stabilized for the new recreational use. The completed rink will act as another steppingstone that connects community spaces from the downtown area to the lakeshore waterfront.

Crafting a Unique Experience

The final design was influenced by input from the community during an open design workshop, as well as stakeholder tours from other prominent ribbon-style rinks in major cities. The WOW Park also features plenty of amenities including riverfront access, athletic fields, a boardwalk, the Sally Smoly Nature Playscape and more.

Clarkston, MI | Under Construction

Clarkston Public Schools developed a bond program as part of a long-term master plan to address district facility needs. The bond is focused on creating safe and secure buildings that are up-to-date and reflective of the innovative learning happening within the district. A $197.5 million bond was passed by the community in 2022 to make the improvements that will better serve the 7,500 students in the district.

The largest project of the bond includes the phased demolition and construction of a new junior high school for 8th and 9th grade students. The current junior high facility is more than 60 years old and requires more flexible spaces, larger classrooms, and improved building efficiency. Because the new junior high will occupy the same site as the current school, phases of demolition and construction will take place while the school is fully occupied. The school’s existing auditorium, construction technology facility, and furniture from a previous bond program will be kept and reused during this project.

The new junior high design is intended to transform the schools’ learning spaces. New extended learning areas throughout with wide corridors and classrooms that are open to those areas will promote collaboration. Updated rooms for STEM/makers space, orchestra and choir, and the health and nutrition class will better support those program needs. A large group instruction room and learning commons near the center of the school will promote the project-based learning happening within the school. A large, open cafeteria will create a secondary space for community and social gatherings of various scales. A learning stair that will give students choice in their learning environment and encourage flexibility and movement will also be added.

On the school site, stormwater management was corrected with a large underground retention system that alleviates flooding. A new bus loop, parking lots and second entrance for student pick up and drop off will create a more efficient experience for parents, students, and staff. Additionally, athletics improvements will be included in this project. A new running track and turf field will be built, while the softball, baseball and practice fields will be renovated.

Overall, the district is excited to welcome 8th and 9th grade students into an environment that accommodates individualized learning and addresses the needs of the adolescent learner.

As part of a larger bond program, Woodhaven-Brownstown School District was able to transition an open area on their high school campus that consisted of practice fields and underutilized space into a premier baseball and softball complex complete with artificial turf.

It was important to the district to create a first-class destination facility for athletics that engages, empowers, and inspires student athletes. The complex was also designed to promote accessibility for all students, athletes, and community members regardless of gender or physical abilities.

Along with new fields, the complex includes a new entry, restrooms, concessions, dug outs, and storage facilities. The turf fields’ design helps Woodhaven promote a sense of school pride with bold logos and school colors that evoke a collegiate feel to the complex. A multipurpose turf practice field located near the complex provides practice space for auxiliary sports and includes a band tower. Extensive planning for the new storm drainage and impact on storm water detention/retention for the site was completed prior to the fields’ installation.

Holland, MI | Completed 2022

As part of a $97.9 million bond issue, West Ottawa Public Schools was looking to create a unique stadium complex for West Michigan with premier facilities for each West Ottawa sport. The district was experiencing capacity issues and programming limitations in the existing Panther Stadium, located at the middle school and the oldest non-renovated facility in the district.

The new stadium complex is located near the West Ottawa High School North campus and provides an intimate athletics spectator experience with the capability to host multiple events simultaneously. Featuring two synthetic turf fields and both large and small venues, weather no longer affects the fields and interrupts the game. An 18×30-foot video board at the football field creates an exciting, professional game experience for players and fans alike, as does a central tunnel beneath the grandstands for the home team to enter the field to cheering fans. The north end zone of the football field has a dedicated section of bleachers for the band, and by removing a track from around the main field, fans are closer to the action for a more intimate spectator experience. Adding elevated fan experiences, such as a concourse level between the upper and lower sections of the home stands, bigger bleachers, and nicer concession stands and restrooms, establishes a venue for multiple sports and attracts the entire community to utilize the facility.

This facility allows our students the opportunity to play in one of the premier complexes in the state of Michigan. We have seen continued interest in lacrosse, football, and soccer, and this complex will be utilized by our community youth from elementary age to high school student-athletes.
